MOSCOW, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Russia is gradually strengthening its position in the global energy sector and aims to become one of the world's leading energy players in the new multipolar world, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak wrote in a column published Thursday in the Energy Policy journal.

"The Russian oil industry is demonstrating steady performance and accounts for some 10 percent of global oil production. Last year, Russia's oil output stood at approximately 512 million tonnes," Novak wrote in the article titled "The Global and Russian Fuel and Energy Sector in the Era of Multipolarity: Horizons and Results for 2025."

He said that Russia produced around 32 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas in 2025, holding a 7 percent share of the global market, making it the world's fourth-largest producer.

According to him, Russia's coal industry is also demonstrating steady performance.

In 2025, the Russian government launched a support program for coal industry enterprises, which includes tax and social insurance contribution deferrals, targeted support schemes for coal companies, as well as compensation for a portion of logistics costs incurred in coal export shipments.

"The measures adopted have enabled us to maintain coal production and supply volumes at 2024 levels. Preliminary estimates show that Russia's coal output reached 440 million tonnes in 2025," Novak wrote. ■
